My wife's uncle needed more floorspace in his trailer because his ailing mother was moving in with the family. He found a fella who needed to unload more than 200 doors. So the uncle hauled the doors home and built his entire addition with doors--floor, walls and ceiling.

It's a cozy addition, complete with a full bathroom and floor-to-ceiling windows.

I envy the ingenuity.

So long to Dickens

This weekend I said good-bye (sort of) to an old friend.

I've known Chris Dickens since junior high. The last couple years, Dickens, my wife and I have formed a creative trinity, collaborating on dumb projects like The Paul Gubbins Show from the Basement, The Shelby Avenue Baptist Singers, Chris Dickens and the Songbirds and Montgomery Trucking. He's also redesigning my websites.

Dickens used to advertise himself on business cards as a "Professional Guy". He's an experienced brick layer, carpenter, plumber, web and print designer, programmer, writer, editor and musician. And he's one of the funniest humans I've ever met. He's moving to Carolina to work on an MFA degree.

So Dickens drove to Carolina in his old Chevy S-10, all his belongings packed under the camper shell. True to style, he suffered a gash to the head, a mechanical breakdown and uneasy nights sleeping upright in the truck. But he also met friends and laughed a lot.

Since my wife and I happened to be in Carolina, we met for an overpriced brunch, not wanting to "waste a perfectly good coincidence," as Dickens explained it.

From the Archives: The Third Great Adventure

I've had nine Great Adventures in my life. The third was a trip from Beijing almost to Pakistan in 2000. I was 24 years-old.

I had been in Beijing six months and befriended some French-speakers, including a Belgian named Diederik. We both had downtime so he suggested we travel from Beijing to Xinjiang, a remote northwestern province that borders Russia and a few Stans. It's predominantly Muslim and desert, with a mountain range through the middle.

Diederik spoke good Mandarin--and four other languages--so could travel cheap and efficient.

The trip lasted a month and cost me less than $300 USD. We traveled about 5,000 miles round-trip and spent roughly 10 days and nights in trains or buses.

In the Taklamakan desert, whose name translates "You go in, you don't come out", several fights broke out on the buses and Diederik lost his wallet and passport--stolen or lost, we didn't know. This caused huge troubles with the backwater bureaucracy of remote China. And we lost half our slim travel monies.

We visited the ruins of a city along the old Silk Road. Muslims nearby offered us lodging. The Chinese police didn't like this and invited themselves over for dinner. It was pure intimidation and very tense.

The same police detained Diederik and I the next morning. They took our stuff, drove us to a city with a foreigner's hotel and warned us not to mix with locals again, "for our safety."

While traveling from Kashgar to Urumqi, a sandstorm covered the train tracks. We waited nearly ten hours while workers shoveled our path clear. Mountains and Russia lay to the north, desert and Tibet to the south.

We also saw a small riot, Chinese police openly beating a Muslim on the street, and we slept one night on the ground outside an airport beside the control tower (because of passport and money trouble due to the theft). And we visited Kashgar, one of only three places so overwhelming I couldn't photograph.

The highlight of the trip, however, was the ascent of Tian Shan, translated "Heavenly mountain".

We had planned only to see Tian Shan lake, an amazing site the Chinese seemed to be colonizing with Han (they probably have by now).

We stood looking at the lake when Diederik announced that we would walk to the snowline of the mountain on the horizon. I told him he was crazy. He insisted.

Apparently, a plant the locals call a "snow lotus" grew at the snowline. It was a pilgrimage or rite-of-passage or whatever to pluck one. Diederik wanted to see a snow lotus.

It took a full day to gather meager equipment--two Chinese-army sleeping bags, two ponchos, twine and some food. The first night we slept in a meadow overlooking the lake. We awoke with a herd of sheep grazing around us.

That morning, we ran across a Uygher family in a yurt. Uygher is an ethnic group in Xinjiang. A yurt is a tent used by nomadic shepherd families.

The Uyghers in the yurt explained, in broken Mandarin, that other Uygher families on the mountain would house us. "Just follow that horse trail all day," they told us. So we left our heavy sleeping bags with them and started walking.

We walked three days, crossing streams on fallen trees, losing the trail, complaining. Eventually, we'd find open land and a yurt.

The yurt-families fed us noodles and goat cheese. At night, we lay on the rug with mom, dad, uncles and children. We all slept side-by-side under one blanket.

At sunrise, they gave us goat milk and we gave them cash, and they pointed toward another yurt.

On day three, we approached the snow line. The air was frigid and the wind hard. We crossed frozen waters and craggy inclines,wet,cold and nervous.

But we found that durn snow lotus. We didn't pluck it, only made photographs, then scrambled down the mountain.

And that was the Third Great Adventure.

I had a free day in Little Rock this weekend, so I called my old friend Stephan Cefalo, a painter and artist-in-residence at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He asked if I would model for a painting. I thought, "Why not?"

So, I spent four hours on my knees pretending to be St. Sebastian as Steve sketched. He'll use me as the main element on a nine-foot square canvas. Pretty cool.

Steve is an accomplished painter who exhibits in the Klaudia Marr gallery in New Mexico, a venue that also features the work of Chuck Close.

Steve is also a family man with five kids, a gentle demeanor and a keen wife. I've known Steve since elementary school and I'm proud to be part of his work.
